Little immediate change will result from the resolution arising from a lack of certainty about the safety of these tobacco free replacements known as electronic cigarettes. However, by raising the matter, the New Hanover County Board of Health is looking for policy makers and government researchers to do more to give the advice to the people that they need about these new devices.
This wellness board is referred to as a leader when it comes to taking action on public-health problems. Before NC had a statewide prohibition on smoking in pubs and restaurants, the county health board had adopted a policy that found most restaurants designating smoking sections or going smoke free altogether.
The board also led the drive to the law requiring customers of buffet style restaurants to pick up a clear plate on every trip.
Now it wants to get out in front of any health problems that may arise from your use of e-cigarettes. The resolution adopted last week carries no legal weight, however it asks the Federal Food and Drug Administration "to enact strict laws overseeing the sale and use of e-cigarettes and to conduct research on the health effect to persons using e-cigarettes and people who come into contact with vapors emitted by such devices" - an audio request.
The Food And Drug Administration defines e - cigarettes as battery operated devices that change nicotine and other substances into a vapor. The user inhales just as they would with a regular smoke, but without the telltale smell and cough-inducing second-hand smoke.
Many people have considered e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. However, are they safe?
